A team of scientists from Greenland and Denmark have started a study on walruses. They have placed two tags on eight walruses in the harsh conditions on the coast of Greenland.
For a long time, scientists all over the world have been eager to know more about these giant beasts, especially the fact of where they move their homes to in the summer. Normally the walruses tagged live on the west coast of Greenland.
The main proposes of this study is not only to learn where they migrate to, but also how hunting in the region, oil exploration in the region, and dramatic climate changes affect the animals.
The tags will allow scientists to monitor every move these mammals make. Using
co-ordinates and the Argos Satellite system, scientists will practically be moving with the walruses. It will also tell scientists a basic average on how much time the walruses spend in water compared to land. The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) website also has started a page called "Walrus Watch" which, with the scientists will show on a map where these eight tagged walruses are.[http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6529663.stm](Walrus Watch Page)
Hopefully, this project will help scientists understand more about these mysterious animals. Maybe, it will also help us learn about how to prevent climate changes for the worse.
